Busting Myths about Contact Lenses

Believe it or not, contact lenses have become quite a controversial topic over the last couple of years. There are so many different articles discussing their advantages and disadvantages; however, not all of them are to be believed. Being aware of all these myths that have been created about contact lenses, we’ve decided to set things straight and debunk the wrong ones. Let’s take a look.

Contact lenses are expensive

How many times have people told you to give up on the idea of wearing contact lenses because they’re too expensive? Well, they are wrong. Of course, the market is vast and you can come across a huge range of prices, but that doesn’t mean that all contact lenses will necessarily cost you an arm and a leg. Additionally, even if you decide to stick to wearing glasses, you should realize that the situation is completely the same. Finally, keep in mind that your health is most important, so don’t shy away from pampering yourself with a high quality pair of lenses that won’t harm your eyes in any way.

They can get lost in the eye

You may be laughing right now, but we’re sure that you’ve considered this possibility at least once. However, we guarantee that a contact lens can’t get lost in your eye no matter what you’re doing. The scientific explanation for this is quite simple – a thin membrane connects the sclera to the inside of your eyelids which prevents anything from getting lost inside your eye. So, it’s high time you gave up on such irrational fears and got yourself a pair of contact lenses.

They are extremely uncomfortable

One of the most common myths spread among worried people is definitely the one about how uncomfortable contact lenses can be. However, this is far from the truth. After a short period of adaptation, the majority of people would tell you that they don’t even notice them anymore. On the other hand, if it happens that you feel a slight irritation and discomfort, this doesn’t mean that you should stop wearing them immediately. Instead, try discomfort remedies like artificial tears, nutritional supplements or other contact lens care products, and find which one suits you the best. Lastly, if these remedies won’t help, don’t shy away from contacting an optometrist who’ll be able to determine the cause of discomfort and find a solution for it.

I am too old for them

Another misconception about contact lenses is that you can be too old for them. This is not true. Nowadays, you can see more and more elderly people opting for contact lenses, thus making life much easier for themselves. The only thing they should pay attention to is choosing lenses specifically designed to suit dry eyes. Finally, owing to the technology that has developed significantly over the last couple of years, now you can even use multifocal contact lenses and kill two birds with one stone.

I can’t wear makeup

You must be joking!  Whether you’re wearing makeup or not is absolutely irrelevant when it comes to making the decision about wearing contact lenses. On top of that, the majority of cosmetic companies are marketing special products just for people with lenses. However, even if you go for regular ones, there is no need to worry, especially if you’re careful enough not to accidentally get your makeup directly into your eye, since that’s the only way you can damage your lenses.

Contact lenses can easily fall out

In the past, contact lenses used to fall out of one’s eyes quite easily. However, with the advancement of technology, this has changed drastically. Nowadays you can opt for soft ones that fit the eye perfectly, which greatly reduces any possibility of losing them. Of course, you should learn how to behave properly while wearing them and forget about rubbing your eyes, since you can’t expect your lenses to stay still if you press too hard. Lastly, if you notice that your lenses fall out of your eyes without you even touching them, contact your ophthalmologist immediately and check whether they are adequately designed.

As you can see, all the myths that we’ve mentioned have nothing to do with reality, but a lot of people still believe in them. Therefore, it’s extremely important to get well-informed and seek advice from professionals instead of blindly believing everything you hear. Finally, contact lenses have shown to be very beneficial to one’s eyesight and we strongly advise you to give them a try.
