Quote: “a friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future and accepts the way that you are today.”
A friend is someone that asks how you are doing and waits to hear the answer. The real answer. The usual “I’m fine” won’t suffice. Real friends hear your answers loud and clear and even perceive the things you don’t say. What this means is that there are people who could literally hear you speak a million words and still not understand you. And there are others (friends) who will understand without you even speaking a single word. Though friendship means understanding, not agreement. There’s an important distinction.
A friend is someone who understands your tears, your fears, your past. As a matter of fact one of the most beautiful qualities of a genuine friendship is to understand and to be understood. Everybody isn’t your friend. So, don’t expect everybody to understand where you’re coming from. You have to notice that there’s people who are happy for your happiness, and sad for your sadness. People who always go all-in with you, those are the real ones. Those are the kind of people that you can call up at 3 a.m. to talk when you feel like you need to get something off of your chest.
Stay away from the ‘friends’ who always try to belittle you or your ambitions. Small-minded people will always do that. Those are not friends. A true friend is one who believes in you even when you have stopped to believe in yourself. It’s in moments like that they would inspire you to become stronger and better. To grow. The best ones make your problems their problems, just so you don’t have to go through your struggles on your own.
Make sure you surround yourself with both the dreamers and the doers. The believers and the thinkers. But, remember, most of all surround yourself with those who see greatness in you. A friend that motivates you is a blessing.
