Diving is an amazing way to see more of this beautiful world. Once you go down, there’s no coming back! Or more accurately, there’s coming back multiple times to explore the sights of the underwater world. If you lack inspiration on your next diving destination, here are the best diving sites in the world for you to explore.
Cape Kri, Raja Ampat, Indonesia
This destination is a coral garden unlike any you’ve seen before. But it won’t only offer amazing coral views, but a great marine life as well. Cape Kri has 374 different species of fish, so be prepared to see a zillion of colors at once! Among the most prominent species are the manta rays, barracudas, sharks, and giant trevallies. If you want to visit this colorful, lively place, make sure to do it from Papua Diving Resort, as it’s best dived from there.
Barracuda Point, Sipadan Island, Malaysia
If you find yourself in Malaysia, Sipadan Island is the place to go looking for a diving adventure – especially the Barracuda Point, home to the many barracuda. This wall of coral showcases a broadly diverse sea life, featuring buffalo fish, coconut crab, sea turtles, white tips, grouper, jacks, and of course, barracuda. Sharks will also come cruising by! However, be prepared and know the circumstances in advance, as this site displays occasional strong sweeping currents.
The Yongala, Australia
Those who love diving around shipwrecks will love the Yongala, just off the coast of Queensland. This is a 109 meters long ship protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act. It sank during a cyclone in 1911 due to no telegraph facilities – she could not be warned of the weather ahead. This resulted in killing 122 people, together with a racehorse and a bull. Today, the Yongala is full of life, so get your diving equipment ready and you might see manta rays, octopuses, turtles, sea snakes, tiger and bull sharks, clouds of fish, and spectacular coral formations. But keep in mind, the entry into the ship is forbidden!
Shark and Yolanda Reef, Egyptian Red Sea, Egypt
When in the area, be sure not to miss this! Shark and Yolanda Reef is actually three dives in one: an anemone city, a shark reef, and the wreck of the Yolanda. You might think this is too much, but it is actually pretty easy to do at once. Thanks to the currents, this is a good site for drift diving, and for pelagic fish as well. A popular dive everyone does starts at Anemone City, continues drifting to Shark Reef, and finishes up on the wreck of the Yolanda ship, with its cargo of toilets. And it’s so good you don’t have to come up with a new route – this one is proven to bring you satisfaction!
Manta Ray Night Dive, Kailua Kona, Hawaii
Do you want a diving show of a lifetime? Then search no further! Manta Ray Night Dive in Hawaii can set an amazing scene for you. Underwater lights set into the ocean floor attract endless amounts of plankton, which then attract the huge, beautiful manta rays of Kailua Kona. The manta rays can get so close to the divers, that you might end up having to move to avoid them hitting you. The place has some wild currents sometimes, but on a good day, you’ll have a wonderful time with one of the most beautiful creatures alive!
Great Blue Hole, Belize
And now for something completely different – Great Blue Hole in Belize is, well, a hole. A giant, incredibly deep hole (143 meters, to be exact), edged with coral reefs. The hole is wide and home to mako and sharks. Despite the size, the visibility in the hole is whopping 30 meters – allowing for the views of vibrant colours and shimmering water, together with the huge tuna and other pelagics. Another interesting point of the hole – the stalactites and stalagmites of its ancient caverns. All in all, this is a site not to be missed! Take into account the best time to dive here – between April and June.
